Cross Roads

CrossRoads Mentoring and Life Skills is based on The Life Skills Training program developed by Dr. Gilbert J. Botvin of Cornell University. We have expanded this organized way to learn life skills for middle and junior high school students to include The Mentoring The 100 Way Through a Lifetime. Cross Roads Mentoring and Life Skills was developed through the collaboration of Dr. Douglas Garner, Antonio Fargas, and Gentry Richardson. This program includes topics that are important to our community.

Teen Talk

Teen Talk, produced by KCEP, is a Public Radio Talk Show designed to give teens a voice. Teen Talk on KCEP is co-produced by teens, focusing on the issues that young adults face today and their contributions, opinions, and achievements. Topics are drawn from top news stories, teen surveys, and the teen producers of the show. Teen Talk on KCEP features entertainment segments, expert advisors, celebrity interviews, and more. The show’s target audience is listeners thirteen to nineteen years of age with an expected adult audience who are curious and want to gain insight into teen realities. The 100 Black Men of Las Vegas has supported Teen Talk in various ways, including sponsorship since 2018. Our 1 to 1 mentoring program partners a teen (male or female) with a mentor to support the mentees’ career goals and daily life challenges. The 100 BMLV has members assigned weekly on-site support for the teens as they prepare and deliver the “live” Saturday broadcasts. The 100 BMLV also sponsors a weekly segment titled: Career Pathways. The Pathways segment was created to introduce the teens and their listening audience to careers they may or may not have considered. The 100 does this by having its members and invited community guests interviewed on-air to share their careers and pathways to career success. Immediately following the conclusion of this segment, the interviewee conducts a workshop with the Teen Talk participants.

Pathways to Public Service

Participants will receive the following:-A structured path towards a public safety career-One public safety class each semester in addition to the core school curricula and structured after school activities under the auspices of a Public Safety or 100 Black Men mentor.-Paid summer internship at a public safety agency during their high school tenure.-12-15 college credits upon graduation and eligibility for a public safety cadet program that will result in employment with the participating agency.

Participating agencies will receive the following benefits:  – A collaborative process with CCSD, CSN and Public Safety to develop a pool of “homegrown” talent for public safety careers.-Consistent and structured opportunities to develop the esteem and potential of local youth, especially those from socioeconomically challenged communities.- Force multiplier for Public Safety recruiting efforts.- Tenured public safety personnel who have a life-long stake in the community.

Rites of Passage

The Rites of Passage Program “Empower Our Sons” is a ten week workshop for Boys ages 12-16. The program runs from September to December of every calendar year. The Rites of Passage workshop is designed to provide the necessary tools to help these boys become responsible young men, on their journey to manhood.

Youth Economic Empowerment Club

This program is designed to teach students between the ages of 14-18 the value of money. Starting in February 2021 the Youth Empowerment Club will meet bi-weekly with two 100 Black Men of Las Vegas Members and a Bank Executive from Wells Fargo. The participants will learn the five key components of financial literacy: earn, spend, save and invest, borrow, and protect. By attending this workshop students will begin to lay the foundation to build strong money habits early on and avoid many mistakes that lead to lifelong money struggles.

Collegiate 100

This year the 100 Black Men of Las Vegas also seek to enhance its local community efforts to include collegiate program and collaboration opportunities. We aim to support the Collegiate 100 Programing at Nevada State College. The Collegiate 100 has a vital role to play on the college campus. The effective execution of that role requires that the Chapter be a responsible, productive, and cooperative segment of 100 Black Men of Las Vegas and the entire college community.    Membership into the Collegiate 100 is drawn primarily from African-American male and female college students. Members of the Collegiate 100 will assist the local 100 Black Men of Las Vegas Chapter with its programmatic initiatives that support the development of social, emotional, education, and physical needs of youth with no positive role models in communities in which they live. The Collegiate 100 also serves as a support network for college students to assist in keeping them in school and focused on graduation.

Scholarship Collaboration

The 100 Black Men of Las Vegas has developed an educational scholarship collaborative partnerships to provide African American students with an opportunity to attend and graduate from Nevada Colleges and Trade Schools. The plan has a retention, tutoring, mentoring, work experience, and employment after graduation components.    The supporting community leaders and organizations are: Gwen Nichole, Berry Gordy Foundation, Dr. Linda Young, Clark County School Board & The Village Foundation Rev.
